Austin’s 2013-2014 Season Will Include The Book of Mormon, Wicked and More

Two young Mormons and a pair of witches from Oz are coming to Austin. The Texas Performing Arts 2013-2014 Broadway Season will include the Tony-winning musical The Book of Mormon and the blockbuster musical Wicked. The season lineup also includes Chicago, Memphis, American Idiot and War Horse. All shows will play the Bass Concert Hall.

The Book of Mormon, winner of nine Tony Awards, will open on October 1, 2013 and close on October 13. Written by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q co-creator Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon follows two young Mormon missionaries sent to Uganda, who soon discover their training did not quite prepare them for the world outside of Salt Lake City.

The razzle-dazzle musical Chicago will strut onto the Austin stage from November 19, 2013 through November 24. A story of fame, fortune and seduction that has thrilled Broadway audiences for years, Chicago features a classic score by John Kander and Fred Ebb that his packed with the hits “All That Jazz,” “Roxie” and “Mr. Cellophane.”

Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, Memphis is the rollicking story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends race lines and airwaves. A Tony winner for Best Musical, Memphis is a powerful story about fame and forbidden love. The musical opens on December 10, 2013 and closes on December 15.

The hit musical American Idiot tells the story of three lifelong friends, forced to choose between their dreams and the safety of suburbia. Based on Green Day’s Grammy Award-winning multi platinum album, the show features the hits “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “21 Guns,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Holiday.” The rock musical will open on January 14, 2014 and run through January 19.

The Broadway mega hit Wicked flies into Austin from February 19, 2014 through March 9. A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, the musical spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous characters: the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good. The Grammy-winning score by Stephen Schwartz features the songs “The Wizard and I,” “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.”

War Horse, winner of five Tony Awards, will run from May 6, 2014 through May 11. Using extraordinary puppets, War Horse tells the story of young Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France at the outbreak of World War I. Albert, unable to forget Joey and still not old enough to enlist, embarks on a mission to find him and bring him home.
